Yes. Like you, I don't like the idea of using toxic chemicals such as DEET (the active ingredient in most repellents) on my skin. Although the EPA says adults and children can safely use DEET as long as they apply it properly, a few reports have linked it to seizures. Fortunately, some natural products effectively ward off insects without side effects or risk.
Geraniol, a compound derived from the geranium plant, repels a variety of insects, including mosquitoes, fleas, and fire ants. In a recent study, candles containing it (widely available at home-goods stores) were 5 times as effective as citronella candles at preventing mosquito bites.
As for citronella oil, a 2002 study found that products containing this plant-based ingredient repelled mosquitoes for only about 20 minutes. And Skin So Soft Bath Oil (which developed a reputation as a powerful natural repellent) offered protection against bugs for less than 10 minutes.

Dr. Weil: Natural Insect Repellent
How can you keep mosquitos away without DEET or other chemicals?
The CDC recommends another plant-based repellent, oil of lemon eucalyptus, to help keep bugs at bay. Studies show it repels mosquitoes and deer ticks about as well as products with DEET for up to 6 hours. It's sold under the brand name Repel.
The newest version, Skin So Soft Bug Guard Plus, contains picaridin, a synthetic repellent that's as effective as DEET but also presents a toxicity risk. I think products that contain geraniol or oil of lemon eucalyptus are better choices.
