Dr. Bump's Presentation

Hey "Healthy Club"!
I went to the Sussex County Holistic Mom's Network meeting last night and a well-known holistic physician in our area, Dr. Bump, gave a health & wellness presentation. There were a few of you that wanted to come but couldn't and there are others in this mailing list that I know would have enjoyed his presentation.
I took a fair amount of notes, as you know this kinda stuff perks my ears. I typed out my notes and what I could remember, an anal process I do in order to force me to remember important things...so that I can add it to my "healthy notebook". Yes, I'm a self-proclaimed detailed, organized freak! :-)
For those of you that are interested, I've attached my notes. A good refesher, and some good new points learned.
For those of you that aren't interested in a "holistic" style...DELETE!
XOXO

KIDS

Kids are more susceptible to chemicals than we are so we need to be very cautious with what they are putting in their mouths and on their bodies. Anything that is an allergen is foreign to the body. You may not have a strong allergy to a specific food, but if it’s a known allergen, it is still foreign to your body.

70% of our immune system is working around our intestines. Reduce the immune system load by reducing the foods that are offensive to our bodies. Wheat is at the top of the list.

BAD DIETARY INFLUENCES
- wheat
- dairy
- high fructose corn syrup
- msg
- hydrogenated fats
- sugar
- preservatives and coloring agents

EXCITOTOXINS

These things are known as “excitotoxins” and should not be in our diets and especially children’s diets:
- coloring agents
- preservatives
- food enhancers

MSG

This is a food taste enhancer, preservative, and/or filler…all different categories and types of MSG.
The govt allows MSG mfr’s to change the name so that it can stay in the foods we eat. When reading ingredient labels, look for these MSG names:
- monosodium glutamate
- hydrolyzed protein/oat flour/vegetable protein/plant protein
- plant protein/yeast extract
- sodium/calcium caseinate
- textured protein or TVP
- autolyzed yeast
- corn oil
If these things are in the ingredient, they will ALWAYS contain MSG.
HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP

Probably one of the worst thins you could put in your body.
It’s completely synthetically created and completely foreign to your body.
It’s a “freak” product.
Converts to triglycerides and then to body fat, stores itself in your fat cells quickly.
Body doesn’t know hot to digest it.
In almost all processed products.
Stimulates the appetite rather than reducing it, so you want more.

COMMON CHILDHOOD CONDITIONS AND THEIR POSSIBLE DIETARY CAUSE

Ear infections/strep throat – sugar, HFCS, dairy especially milk, refined wheat—excess mucous.
Allergies – wheat, dairy, corn, soy, sugar, peanuts, OJ, shell fish
ADD/ADHD/Hyper kids – social and family issues may play a role but possibly also: colorings, preservatives, medications, HFCS
Eczema – wheat, dairy, corn
Asthma – wheat, dairy, corn
Constipation/gas/loose stool – supplement with “pro-flora”

DAIRY

The protein “casein” is found in all dairy products, cow’s milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt. It’s a known allergen (which means it’s foreign to the body). Creates your immune system to kick into gear because it is foreign. Good for cows, bad for children!

If you have a child with runny nose, congestion, ear infections, take them off milk.

If you still want dairy, cheese and yogurt are better options than milk because they are better tolerated.

Casein is a mucous protein. It is used in many industries as a filler and adhesive. It is thick and gooey and creates a lot of mucous. This protein is used in glue, why Elsie the cow used to be on Elmer’s glue products.

Milk as the primary “calcium and vitamin D” source was human need created by the dairy industry and is simply not true. Anything that comes from the earth, is grown from the earth, will have enough calcium for you and the sun provides all the vitamin D you need.

No other animal species drinks some form of milk after they have been weaned from their mothers. Humans weren’t made to drink cow milk. We were made to drink our mother’s milk, human milk.

Goats milk and ___? Milk do not have the casein protein.

WHAT TO DRINK

Water and teas. Replace milk and fruit juice with water or flavored water and teas. Not flavored with sugar…not the junk water bottles with flavors you can buy. Flavored by teas, like cold raspberry tea flavored water for kids! Reduce or eliminate milk, OJ, fruit juices, juice boxes especially.

ORGANIC

“Biodynamic” is always the best choice, better than USDA organic – they follow better guidelines

“California certified” is better than USDA organic.

USDA organic round seal is better than buying anything conventional, but is watered down guidelines compared to biodynamic and CA cert.

Organic fruit purchased from the standard food supermarkets typically comes from countries outside the US and their organic guidelines cannot be trusted. Who is regulating the guidelines? Best organic option is to buy locally or from a reputable US source.

A good quality organic brand will not have high fructose corn syrup.

WHEAT

Bread, pasta, bagels, pancakes, waffles, crackers, cookies, pizza and any prepared processed food.

An allergen and promotes autoimmunity in those genetically predisposed. Associated with autism, asbergers, add/adhd, headache, intestinal problems, etc…

Gluten is the protein element of wheat. Spelt and Kamut are wheat also, but better options. They are old world wheat processing.

Flour is made from a variety of sources, but all grains: wheat, oat, rice.

Rice is a grain, but a better choice than oats or wheat, because it is better tolerated.

Wheat was introduced into human diet approx 10-15k years ago. In relation to the human history of millions of years, this 15k years is very small. Introduced into our diets by the agricultural industry.

Only rice pasta. -- All grains go against our dietary genomes.

PEANUTS

Peanuts are grown underground and have much mold. During the mfr process, workers run peanuts on conveyor belts through ultraviolet lights, any nut that shows a lot of mold is tossed out. There are many mold spores that are not seen by human eye and enter our food supply, hence all the allergies. A little bit of mold on a nut feeds off itself and grows.

PB&J alternative would be almond butter or cashew butter. Spelt bread or wraps.

SOY

The jury isn’t in on soy, so eat it as the Chinese did hundreds of years ago, only as fermented.

WINE AND CHOCOLATE

Red wine and organic dark chocolate are nature’s gifts to humans! Eat and drink them in moderation, they do have health benefits!

PIZZA

Pizza has a double gluten content in the dough and at pizzerias the cheese is usually artificial since it is cheaper so there really is no nutritional benefit to pizza. However, it is a happy soul type of food, and great for social gatherings and parties. So eat it in moderation, if you are eating healthy all other days, having a slice isn’t going to be a toxic dump for your body. Have a slice with a salad, instead of 2 slices and feel good about it.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS

Love & peacefulness is why we should be living, not feelings of fear or negativity. Negativity and stress causes many emotional and physical issues, health issues.

Don’t put yourself into a health bubble, restricting yourself to 100% only organic and never eating anything else, not being able to eat out…In today’s society, that lifestyle is very difficult and causes stress. It’s important to eat healthy every day though. Find a healthy balance to be peaceful.

SMOOTHIES

He puts in his smoothie every morning a variety of things I couldn’t write down quick enough, but did write down these:
- cucumbers
- spinach
- hemp seed (he says much better than flax seed, put them in coffee grinder first)
- raw egg (great protein source, if fresh, clean and organic, shouldn’t be concerned)
- fruit
- gogi berries*
- maca powder*
- cacao beans*
* called these the “powerhouse foods” and said they are critical antioxidants

ORGANIC CHICKEN/BEEF/TURKEY

Key to this is finding out if the source does truly have “free range” which means animals are OUTSIDE a structure picking and pecking and grazing like normal animals. Sometimes “organic” chicken means there are 300k chickens crammed back to back in a barn which has a 12” opening that extends out to a 10’ x 10’ fenced in area. Naturally, few of the chickens leave the barn, they are too far away from the opening, or because they are flocking birds, they don’t want to leave.

VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS

Fish oil a must for everyone.
Probiotics aren’t needed daily. OK for kids to take them. Change the strains you take every so often. If you have to take antibiotics (which are terrible for the gut), take probiotics with them and then take probiotics for one month after completing the antibiotics.
Make sure your supplements from a good source, get a “certificate of analysis” done by an outside company to make sure they are checking the purity of their ingredient they get from their suppliers, and checking the final product they produce. New Chapter is the best OTC brand.

ASPARTAME

An intense source of excitotoxins. When ingested converts to a near duplicate of a powerful brain tumor causing agent, among other health problems. It is extremely dangerous. Don’t eat anything that has these messages on their labels:
- diet
- low fat
- low calorie
- sugar free

KIDS’ BREAKFAST

Scrambled eggs
Smoothies
No cereal
Always start the day with protein.

OTHER

Mercury toxicity urine test $65

Wheat grass shots do not equal 2 or 3 lbs of veggies. Much work to grow & make shots so better route would be to grow variety of sprouts and just put them on salads every day.

Dana Ray Farm in Frankford is biodynamic.

No vaccines, but DTP is the least risky. No flu shots. But for college, his kids did get shots needed to get in.
